Reviews of Our Ergonomic Chairs

The Key Features of an Ergonomic Office Chair

Below you will find the key features to consider when purchasing an ergonomic chair. If your chair doesn't have these features, then in our professional opinion, it is not a fully adjustable ergonomic chair. All of the ergonomic chairs on our website have the features listed here.

Lumbar Support

The lumbar support is the most important feature of any good ergonomic desk chair. Without good lumbar support, a chair cannot be regarded as being "ergonomic".

The reason for this is that when you sit, your lumbar spine flattens (i.e. the natural curve or lumbar lordosis disappears), placing increased stress on the discs, ligaments and joints of the lumbar region. This is why so many people experience lower back pain when sitting. A prominent lumbar support helps to prevent the spine from flattening, instead keeping the lumbar spine in a neutral alignment (providing the lumbar support is actually in the correct position and is prominent enough).

By maintaining a neutral lumbar spine alignment, the added bonus is that the rest of the spine is then also propped up and supported.

Seat Pan Depth

The seat pan is the cushion you sit on. The seat pan depth is therefore the distance from the back to the front of the seat cushion. From a sizing perspective, it is the most important part to get right when choosing the correct ergonomic chair.

If the seat pan is too deep for your height and leg length, you will find it difficult to sit right back into the seat pan and have your back firmly placed against the backrest (which is how you should be sitting for optimal back support). You will also have greater difficulty in putting your feet firmly on the ground, which is likely to result in you leaning forwards, once again reducing the effectiveness of the backrest, and encouraging you to adopt awkward pain inducing postures.

If the seat pan is too shallow for your height or leg length, the main issue you will find is that you may feel unsupported under the thighs. This isn't as problematic as the issues that arise when the seat pan is too deep. Nevertheless, some users do find this uncomfortable.

The seat pan depth is more important for shorter users than it is for taller users. Put another way, a taller user may get away with using a seat pan that is too small for them, but a shorter user will struggle with a seat pan that is too big.

Angle Adjustability

For your chair to be truly ergonomic, it must have independent adjustability of seat pan angle and backrest angle. Otherwise, you will be unable to adjust and lock the chair in whatever position is required for your individual needs.

Many chairs have combined seat pan angle and backrest angle adjustability. This means that when one moves, so does the other. This is often marketed as a "synchro mechanism" or a "self adjusting mechanism". In our opinion, this is not recommended, because it does not allow you to position and lock the chair in the perfect position for your needs. One of the key purposes of investing in a proper ergonomic chair is to be able to position the seat pan and backrest at the specific angle required to suit your needs.

Another thing to look out for is pre-set backrest angle adjustability. Some chairs have a few pre-set positions that the backrest can be locked in. Unfortunately, these pre-set positions are very rarely suitable for most users, meaning the backrest is unable to be locked at the ideal ergonomic angle.

Backrest Height Adjustability

As mentioned above, the most important part of an ergonomic chair is the lumbar support. To get the most out of the lumbar support, it must be in the correct position, that being the lumbar spine region.

With this in mind, a good ergonomic chair should allow you to adjust the height of the backrest (i.e. move it up and down) so that the lumbar support can be positioned appropriately based on your torso length (i.e. your height).

The ability to adjust the height of the backrest, and specifically the position of the lumbar support, is more important than the overall length of the backrest. This is because if the lumbar spine is supported, it will prop up and support the rest of the spine. As such, don't get caught up in the trap of thinking that you need a really long backrest. In fact, experience suggests that the longer the backrest, the less prominent the lumbar support.

If your chair is set up correctly, and you're doing regular computer work, everything revolves around having great lumbar spine support in the correct position. And this requires that the backrest height be adjustable.
