Ergonomic Kneeling Chair

The Align ergonomic kneeling chair is designed and recommended by Physio's. It is the only kneeling chair that we recommend here at The Ergonomic Physio.

We recommend the Align kneeling chair to those who find prolonged sitting in a standard ergonomic office chair painful, especially if that pain is located in the lumbar spine. The Align kneeling chair is also recommended for those who are trying to improve their posture.

What are the benefits of a kneeling chair?

Spinal Health Benefits

Sitting in a standard office chair flattens the lumbar spine and the natural lumbar lordosis is lost. This places increased stress to the vertebral discs, ligaments and musculature at the posterior (back/rear) aspect of the lumbar spine. Over time, and when done for prolonged periods, this can lead to weakening of these structures and pain subsequently develops.

The Align ergonomic kneeling chair helps to prevent this by keeping the spine in its neutral alignment, ensuring the lumbar lordosis is maintained.

Further, because the weight is shared between the buttocks and the shins when sitting on the Align kneeling chair, as opposed to all of the weight being transferred through the buttocks in a standard office chair, the Align kneeling chair results in less compressive force being transferred directly through the lumbar spine, which reduces the likelihood of spinal changes occurring.

Postural Benefits

Sitting in a standard office chair encourages a forward leaning and rounded shoulder posture. Over time, this can lead to muscular tightnesses keeping the shoulders in a rounded posture permanently. Not only does this lead to postural problems, it is also an increased risk factor for neck pain, shoulder pain and headaches, due to the increased strain placed on the neck caused by rounded shoulders.

In contrast, the Align ergonomic kneeling chair encourages an erect posture, with the spine straight and shoulders back, thereby helping to prevent the dreaded rounded shoulder posture.

Should you get the backrest?

The Align ergonomic kneeling chair has been designed so that a backrest is not needed to be used. This helps to keep the spine in its neutral alignment and helps to prevent you getting lazy. However, with that said, the human body isn't designed to sit all day and occasionally resting the spinal and core muscles by utilising the optional backrest is not a bad option.

So, adding the optional backrest is a personal choice. If you plan on using the Align ergonomic kneeling chair for short periods of sitting only, you probably don't need it. However, if you plan on sitting in the Align kneeling chair all day, we recommend the backrest.
