Document Holders and Writing Slopes
Document holders and writing slopes are an essential part of an ergonomic workspace and can make dramatic improvements to your overall comfort and productivity, and help to reduce the risk of injury.
One of the biggest problems that we see in offices is employees leaning forwards or rotating to reach their reference documents, and looking down excessively to read them. This places increased stress on the lower back, neck and shoulder regions. A document holder is an effective way to reduce these risks and make you working environment more comfortable.
Document holders are also an effective way to decrease clutter on the desk and improve productivity, by ensuring reference materials are readily available and easy accessible.
A document holder should ideally be positioned directly in front of you, between the keyboard and monitor. This helps to keep your reference documents in-line with your body, preventing any unwanted and unnecessary rotation of the spine. If you are using your document holder as a document holder only, and not also as a writing slope (see below), you should aim to raise it as high as possible without obstructing your view of the monitor.
If you frequently need to switch between typing on the keyboard and writing notes or marking reference materials, you are better off using a combined document holder and writing slope. A writing slope allows the document holder surface to slide down over the keyboard, so that whenever you need to switch from typing to writing, you can just slide the writing slope down. This is instead of reaching forwards over the keyboard.
Our recommended document holders and writing slopes are shown below.
